林 真衣のプロフィール


1984年大阪で生まれる。

生まれて間もなく、不慮の事故で全身やけどを負う。手術のため入退院を繰り返す。物作りが好きで、入院中は絵を描いたりミサンガを編んだり。折り紙を折っては、看護婦さんにプレゼントをしていた。人が喜ぶ姿を見ることが、大好きな子供。ケロイドは紫外線に弱く、一年中長袖長ズボン大きな帽子。いつも日影を探し火傷の跡を隠して、過ごした幼少期。日焼けをすると、再生できない肌を見ながら「美しい」とは何か、「生きている」「死んでいる」とは何かを考え始める。

描くことが好きだったこともあり、高校は美術科に進学する。そこで、「美しい」という概念は一つではなく、無数の価値観があることを知り、心が救われたような経験をする。美術を通して、自分自身の存在を受け入れることができた。大学は洋画クラスに進学。大学受験のために描いていた高校の頃とは、全く違う授業や個性豊かな先生達から刺激を受ける。油彩の持つ独特の透明感、絵の具を重ねていくことで作られる空間性、存在が浮かび上がる感覚。マチエール（絵肌）に興味を持ち制作する。

現在は、結婚・出産を機に京都に移り住む。子育てをする中で自分中心だった生活が一変し、子供の時間に合わせることが増える。そんな生活の中で、絵画との関わり方にも少しずつ変化が生まれる。全て自分の思い通りに構築して完成に導くというよりは、画面の中で他者の存在（自身の中の他者も含む）と対話すること自体に、関心を持ち始めている。

違いを認め合い、違いを楽しめる世界を創ります。

これは全てを受け入れるという意味ではなく、それぞれの存在価値を認め合いながら、共生していくことができる世界を追い求めたいという意思です。

絵画制作について

日常の何気ない時間や、空間をモチーフに制作しています。何気ないもの中に見え隠れする、特別な存在を意識していたいと思っています。近年は、絵の具と油をハンドミキサーで泡立てて、キャンバスにかけ流し、乾燥させた画面に、グレージングしていく技法を研究しています。泡の痕跡はどこに出現するかわからないし、全てが残るとも限りません。気温や湿度によっても、現れかたが変わります。コントロールしきれない他者として、彼らとの対話を楽しんでいます。幾重にも重なるイメージから、忘れてしまいそうな記憶や、見えないものに触れてみたいと考えています。

Profile

Born Osaka, 1984.

Shortly after birth, Mai suffered severe burns from an unfortunate accident, requiring her to repeatedly visit hospital for surgery throughout her youth.

Whilst in hospital, she came to the realisation that making things made her happy. She drew pictures, knitted a ‘miçanga’, made promise rings and created origami, which she gave to the nurses as gifts. She was a girl who loved to see happiness and joy in people’s faces.

Because her burns were vulnerable to ultraviolet light, Mai had to wear long-sleeved clothes, long pants and wide hats in all seasons throughout her childhood. Days were spent seeking out shade and protecting her burns from the sunlight.

One day, when she got tanned, Mai started to contemplate those parts of her skin that could never be healed, and started to think to herself: “What is beauty? What is life and death?”.

Having found that she enjoyed drawing and painting so much, she applied to a high school which had an art course, and was accepted. Whilst there, she began to realise that the classical concept of “beauty” was not the only one, and that there were countless other interpretations of the idea. She felt a great sense of relief, and realised she could accept herself and her identity through art.

Mai next went to University to pursue a degree in Western Painting, where she was exhilarated by the rich personality of the course tutors and the atmosphere of the classes, so different to that of high school. She became interested in oil paint’s unique quality of translucence, the intensity of the colours which could be created by multiple layers of paint, and the rough, earthy, tangible realness of the ‘matière’ (textures) of the paint itself. It made and continues to make her fascinated and motivated to create paintings.

At present, Mai lives in Kyoto with her husband and two children, now dedicating herself and her time to them and their needs, rather than her own. As her daily life has changed, so too has her style of and approach to painting.

Whereas before Mai might have worked towards a ‘finished product’ or ‘accomplishment’, crafting each step along the way as she wished and in accordance with her own desires, she now prefers to create artwork as an ongoing, organic dialogue between herself, the artwork she is creating, and the myriad contrasting aspects of her own personality.

“I want to create the world where people accept their differences and can take delight in them”

Mai doesn’t mean by this that everything should be accepted unquestioningly, rather it is her wish that we create a world in which we can accept each others’ values and live together in a spirit of tolerance.

Themes and techniques

Mai’s motif in her art is simple, unspecial moments and spaces of daily life. She wants to elicit a reflection on those simple, seemingly banal everyday things and let the viewer perceive their hidden unique and special nature.

In recent years, Mai has been studying a technique consisting of mixing paint and oil by hand, pouring it on canvas, and allowing it to dry before glazing it. With this process, bubbles naturally form based on unpredictable changes of temperature and humidity, making it impossible to predict what parts of the canvas will be affected. That this process is completely outside human control is very appealing to Mai, as it gives her another layer of ‘conversation’ to have with her own artworks. That dialogue adds layers of images, half-forgotten memories, invisible things.
